The Mount Washington Grange Hall was built on Maple Street in Whitefield, New Hampshire in 1894 by the local Grange chapter #116 for meetings, recreation, pageants, dinners and exhibitions. Over the years, it has served many other purposes. From the 1940's to the 70's it was a depot for the electric utility, Public Service of New Hampshire. When the Grangers sold the building in the 70’s, the upper floor was mostly used for storage. An electric parts supply company rented and renovated the first floor to include an office. The property eventually went into foreclosure. In 2000, the Grange Hall, still in foreclosure, was found by the WVAA to be the perfect facility to provide rehearsal, storage and office space for the Weathervane Theatre. During the finale of the first Weathervane Theatre alumni show in July 2000, it was announced that a down payment had been made on the Grange and the building was being purchased by the newly formed Weathervane Theatre Alumni Association for use by the theatre company.
Convenience and...Costumes!

Located two blocks from the Spruces, the theatre's summer residence, the 5,400 square foot structure includes a large storage area that will contain the theatre's costume collection, a garage for vehicle and set storage, and offices for the business manager and marketing director. Upstairs, three large rooms now serve as the Company’s first dedicated rehearsal facility.

The Collapse

In the winter of 2001, the Grange roof collapsed under heavy snow. Due to the tremendous efforts of local volunteers, alumni and Commonwealth Construction Company, the original roof was replaced, the electric wiring was brought up to code, and the Grange Hall opened as planned that summer. In the fall of 2001, the WVAA kicked off a 2-year capital campaign to complete the building’s purchase and renovation.

In Faith, Hope and Charity With Fidelity...

These are the words borne by an old sign that still hangs in the Grange Hall from its early days as a meeting place for the Mount Washington Grange. The WVAA believes it perfectly exemplifies our sentiments toward the theatre.
